Irish Folklore Preservation

Uaigneas An Chladaigh is an audio-visual archive of Irish folklore, told by recent (or relatively recent) immigrants from Ireland as well as Irish-Americans. This project was born out of a growing desire to preserve ancestral stories and Irish heritage.

My childhood as a third generation Irish American inspired this project. As my younger self tried to find out more about my great-grandparents' lives in Ireland, my family’s responses, centered solely on their experiences in America, with little mention of their life in Ireland OR even with no answers at all. This pattern of silence around Ireland, as well as my growing awareness of how Irish mythology and folklore are frequently misconstrued, particularly in American media, sparked my passion for starting this archive.

A recent conversation solidified my purpose. She shared folklore and supernatural experiences that had been orally passed down through her family, which only deepened my urgency to preserve these stories.

The Irish immigrant and diaspora experience is layered and complex.

Through audio recordings, video interviews, graphics, and imagery, Uaigneas An Chladaigh will document not only the folklore passed down through generations but also the lived experiences of those who hold these stories. This project is a commitment to ensuring the voices of Irish immigrants are not forgotten and that the Irish diaspora has a wealth of stories to pass down to future generations, preserving a vital connection to their roots.
